About the National Civil War Institute

Our Mission

The National Civil War Institute exists to provide the most comprehensive, balanced, and thoroughly documented study of the American Civil War available to the public.

Our mission is simple:

To tell the complete story of the Civil War—from both sides, through the words of those who lived it.

Rather than promoting modern political agendas or reducing the conflict to simplistic explanations, we believe history deserves to be examined in all of its complexity. Every campaign, every battle, every political debate, every civilian experience, and every soldier's sacrifice forms part of the larger story of America's greatest national crisis.

History should never be feared. It should be studied.

A History of Both North and South

The Civil War was fought by Americans on both sides of the battlefield.

More than three million men served under the flags of the Union and the Confederacy. Hundreds of thousands never returned home.

Our work seeks to remember all of them.

We honor the courage, endurance, and sacrifice displayed by soldiers regardless of the uniform they wore. Studying one side does not diminish the other. Understanding the motivations, beliefs, and experiences of both Union and Confederate participants provides a fuller picture of the conflict than either perspective alone.

History should explain people before it judges them.

A Commitment to Primary Sources

At the National Civil War Institute, our foundation is the historical record itself.

Our research relies extensively upon:

  • Official military reports from both governments

  • Soldiers' letters and diaries

  • Newspapers from North and South

  • Government correspondence

  • Personal memoirs

  • Congressional debates

  • State documents

  • Contemporary speeches

  • Naval records

  • Photographs and battlefield archaeology

Above all, we seek to allow historical figures to speak in their own words whenever possible.

Whenever interpretations differ, we present the evidence and encourage thoughtful examination rather than demanding predetermined conclusions.

Beyond the Battlefield

The Civil War was far more than a series of military campaigns.

The Institute explores every aspect of the era, including:

  • Military operations

  • Leadership

  • Politics

  • Constitutional debates

  • The Sectional Divide

  • Diplomacy

  • Religion

  • Economics

  • Naval warfare

  • Technology

  • Civilian life

  • Medicine

  • Reconstruction

  • Memory and remembrance

Our goal is not merely to recount battles, but to understand the society that produced them and the nation that emerged afterward.

Chronological History

One of the central projects of the National Civil War Institute is the creation of a complete chronological narrative of the Civil War.

Beginning with the great political disputes of the Founding Fathers, and the subsequent half century of debates on the role and Nature of Government, we are brought to the political crisis of 1860. We continue the whole course of the war, and go through Reconstruction. We seek to present the conflict day by day, drawing from official reports, eyewitness accounts, newspapers, and contemporary correspondence.

By following events as they unfolded, readers can better understand how decisions were made, how armies moved, and how ordinary Americans experienced the war in real time.

Honest History

The Civil War remains one of the most discussed—and often most misunderstood—periods in American history.

Modern debates frequently emphasize only portions of the historical record while overlooking evidence that complicates popular narratives.

The National Civil War Institute is committed to approaching every subject with intellectual honesty.

We recognize that historians often disagree. We welcome serious discussion supported by evidence. We believe difficult questions should be investigated rather than avoided.

Our commitment is not to defending myths, nor to dismantling them for their own sake, but to pursuing historical truth wherever the evidence leads.

Education for Everyone

Whether you are a lifelong Civil War enthusiast, a student just beginning your journey, a battlefield visitor, a reenactor, a teacher, or simply someone who wants to understand one of the defining events in American history, the National Civil War Institute exists to serve you.

Through articles, lectures, videos, documentaries, battlefield studies, document analysis, and educational programming, we strive to make serious Civil War scholarship accessible without sacrificing depth or historical accuracy.

Our Guiding Principle

The Civil War was fought by real people—not legends, not caricatures, and not political symbols.

Their hopes, fears, convictions, triumphs, and tragedies deserve to be remembered with fairness, humility, and respect.

At the National Civil War Institute, we believe that the closer we come to understanding the past on its own terms, the better equipped we are to understand ourselves.

"History, preserved. Evidence, examined. The Civil War, remembered."
